DLR Group’s design transforms a former University of Nebraska residence hall into a modern environment focused on student retention, engagement, and wellbeing.

(LINCOLN, Neb.  – November 10, 2022) ― Following the onset of new housing facilities at the University of Nebraska, Neihardt Complex officially closed its doors to student housing in 2019. After nine decades of operation, the facility served as temporary swing space for the campus but remained heavily underutilized. To overcome outdated building conditions, and to better serve the daily needs of students, DLR Group is designing a transformation that brings new student support spaces to campus.

The Neihardt Complex consists of several connected buildings constructed in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, including Heppner, Love, Piper, and Raymond Halls. Its location along a main student circulation path provides prime real estate for a new campus resource dedicated to community building, engagement, recruiting and retention, and student wellbeing. DLR Group’s design includes a mix of spaces for individual work, small groups, and large gatherings for a range of university offices and student functions. New building systems will improve the indoor environment and an interior courtyard will enhance the space by seamlessly connecting students to their natural surroundings.

“This project is special to the entire campus population, as well as to DLR Group. It rejuvenates an iconic structure and creates a new space where students can have authentic experiences during their collegiate years,” said DLR Group Senior Associate Adam Post, AIA, WELL AP. “DLR Group’s design will respect the facility’s storied past while also providing a modern environment that will serve the University of Nebraska for the next century.”

Design is currently underway. Construction is expected to be completed in May 2024.
