Cleveland, Ohio –April 5, 2023– Learning By Design has published the annual Spring 2023 Educational Facilities Design Awards Showcase. The April 2023 edition features a large assortment of exemplary PK-12 and post-secondary campus buildings. These recently or soon to be activated projects include newly constructed entire schools and or renovated spaces that house early childhood, middle school, high school, specialized education, and higher education environments. In total fifty-one entries were juried and scored based on six criteria of: Innovation; Sustainability; Interiors; Next Generation Learning; Planning and Functional Design; and Community Needs.
A distinguished panel of five architects and education facility professionals reviewed and debated the merits of all fifty-one submissions. Ten of the highest scoring submissions were bestowed top awards. These well-designed projects stood out for their novel design thinking, transparency, connectivity, safety, sustainability, great interiors, and sophistication. Three projects rose to the top and were deemed the best and awarded Grand Prize Awards, four runners-up were designated with Citation of Excellence Awards, and three projects bestowing unique designs or admiral undertakings were given Honorable Mention Awards.
The selected three “architecturally brilliant” Grand Prize Award winners combined all the elements that make a learning environment successful—
- NAC (Los Angeles, CA) for the Crenshaw High School New Performing Arts Center with Food Service, Lunch Pavilion and Student Store (Los Angeles, CA) – “The use of color, materials, natural light, and play between interior and exterior spaces is thoughtful and enhances the user’s experience. Beautiful beacon for the campus, the contrast of new and old on campus is tasteful and well done.”
- Clark Nexen (Ashville, NC) for the Edneyville Elementary School (Edneyville, NC) – “Such a beautiful school. The design is fresh, amazing job utilizing the site topography, the sustainable features are apparent in both the exterior and interior elements.”
- HMFH Architects, Inc. (Cambridge, MA) for the Maria Weston Chapman Middle School (Weymouth, MA) – “This is a unique and exciting design for a middle school. Interior spaces are well programmed and organized to celebrate gathering in common areas, while successfully separating different grade levels.
